Straw Golf Hats | In Vogue Or Out of Touch?

Greg Norman and His Golf Straw Hat

I must admit, I’ve worn straw golf hats before out on the course. Not often, and not with much pride, but I have. Let me tell you the story about it.

I was in Phoenix Arizona with my brother. I was spending the summer there, clerking for a judge. I was in my 1st summer of law school and didn’t have a care in the world. I was working for free and living off of credit cards, and all I wanted to do that summer was play golf. We also drank a little bit from time to time.

One day, after a few drinks, we went to the local grocery store to get some dinner or something. There, right as you walk in, was a stand of straw golf hats. I saw them and couldn’t look away. The had a straw golf hat for guys, ladies straw golf hats, and even some bucket golf hats. I knew I had to get one, and then wear it on the course. And I did.

I must say, though, that straw golf hats are the kinds of items that carry themselves. Much like plaid golf pants or a sleeveless golf shirt. If you are are wearing these, you want everything else to be toned down. Everyone will be staring at your head anyway, so it’s best to just let the eyes focus on what they want to.

Bottom line here, I think, is that a straw golf hat is not really in vogue these days. When the only person I can find wearing one is the Shark, who doesn’t even play golf anymore, that should tell you that it’s probably not the thing that everyone is doing.

But, if you really want to wear one, don’t let the fact that no one else is wearing one discourage you. Every trend starts with a trend setter, and the trend setter here could be you. Just think about it. You could be the beginning of a worldwide golf fashion change! Or you could be the only guy out on the course with a golf hat made of straw. I think either way you’re a winner!
